Frases hechas con preposición
On time, in the end, by accident, because of
|---|---|---|
| a tiempo | on time | in time |
| al final | at the end | in the end |
On time · in time
The train left on time.
El tren salió puntual.
on time
We got there in time to see the start.
Llegamos con tiempo para ver el comienzo.
in time
La prueba: ¿había una hora acordada? → on time. → in time. Por eso in time suele llevar algo detrás: in time for dinner, in time to catch the bus.
At the end · in the end
At the end of the film, everyone cried.
Al final de la película, todos lloraron.
at the end of
In the end, we stayed at home.
Al final, nos quedamos en casa.
in the end
La prueba: ¿puedes añadir of algo —at the end of the film, of the month? → at the end. Si significa finalmente, después de pensarlo mucho, y no hay of posible → in the end.
By accident · on purpose
Sin querer es by accident; a propósito es on purpose. Y por casualidad es by chance: We met by chance at the airport.
Because of: delante va un sustantivo
| Frase | Significa | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| because of | por, a causa de | We stayed home because of the rain. |
| thanks to | gracias a | I passed thanks to your help. |
| due to | debido a — más formal | The flight was delayed due to the weather. |
| instead of | en vez de | Let’s walk instead of taking the bus. |
| in spite of | a pesar de | We went out in spite of the rain. |
Error típico
We stayed home because of it was raining.
We stayed home because it was raining.
because va delante de una frase con verbo; because of, delante de un sustantivo. Las dos versiones correctas son because it was raining y because of the rain.
Error típico
Despite of the rain, we went out.
Despite the rain, we went out.
despite y in spite of significan lo mismo, pero despite no lleva of.
